Telltale Games and Marvel are joining forces to bring you video game goodness in 2017.
Neither Telltale nor Marvel had much to say on the subject by way of their official sites, but the potential here is huge. Marvel, also known as the House of Ideas, has a stable of 8,000 characters covering every storytelling style imaginable. Characters such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and many others are dead center in the public consciousness thanks to their success on the big screen.
Telltale’s episodic style of game design and distribution has been used to offer fans Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and the Vertigo comic book series Fables. Given the episodic nature of comic books, the relationship between Marvel and Telltale makes a lot of sense. There’s even potential here for Telltale to tap some of Marvel’s creative talent to help write and even design the games.
Since there’s not much actual concrete news here, let’s speculate a little bit. Whether the games will take cues from the cinematic universe or the comic book one (or both) remains to be seen at this point, but the one solid piece of information — a 2017 release — might offer some insight. That year a trio of Marvel Studios movies are hitting the big screen: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spider-Man, and Thor: Ragnarok. If that doesn’t translate into a game where you can play as Groot or Rocket, there’s something ultimately wrong with the universe.
