What would Man of Steel look like with more natural color? That’s what the gang over at VideoLab wanted to see. So, they took clips from the film, played with the color balances and saturation and came up with some pretty interesting results.
As you can see from the compared clips, the film’s colors were played with in order to meet the vision of director Zack Snyder. This is pretty common, especially when you compare the look of this film to not just Christopher Nolan’s Batfilms, but also Snyder’s other films like Watchmen and Sucker Punch. Like just about everything you see on the screen, it was a choice and whether it was the right one can be argued about until the next round of remakes.
The VideoLab gang do note that their colorized clips are “a bit oversaturated and contain contrast artifacts.” They also admitted to putting “too much green in the savanna,” but did their best given the original nature of the color as it appeared.
It does seem important to note that, while Man of Steel certainly has its detractors and many people aren’t overly fond of the dark aesthetic seen there and in upcoming material for Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the movie was far from a failure. Warners’ $225 million budget might not have been put into a natural color scheme, but it did help the film make $668 million worldwide.
Still, the basic point made in the video that “Superman should fly in blue skies, not gray ones,” hits home. Man of Steel certainly told the story of an inexperienced hero trying to find his way in the world with a massive threat looming, but the dark tone in both story and look does not need to be felt throughout Superman’s movies moving forward. As one of the most positive and inspirational superheroes around, Superman deserves to be shown in a light that accentuates those qualities instead of burying him in the muck because it worked for another hero.
